I trimmed one end curved to fit tightly at the bow. 04x.08 styrene was glued in-between the two mahogany strips. As per the instructions, two 12" mahogany strips were cut from the bundle of mahogany wood. Only the 3/8" strips are used for the top deck.ĭay 23: Planking the forward deck would be an all day but pleasant job.
To summarize, the side planking was 1/16" x 1/2" strips and the top 1/16"x 3/8". Cross pieces were then laid to tie the edges of the hatch. These were glued down and the sides trimmed to match the hull shape. The parts P1 are two halves of this section. Towards the top, one only needed to cut shorter and shorter strips to fill in the gaps.ĭay 22: This time, only the outside edges of the deck were planked. As the planks progressed upwards, the strips would follow the natural curves of the hull. The strips were glued in the same way as the bottom planking. The side planking started at the chines and worked all the way to the sheer. This piece resembled a frame to go around the top deck. When the mahogany was first laid, It went quickly from there. Fortunately, I could work around this easily. The main difficulty I ran into was that a few of the mahogany strips were too brittle. I agree that a better method would be in order. The mahogany planking wasn't a problem for me. All in all I'm pleased the way it turned out it's a joy to drive and display! As it turned out, It stopped at the white boot topper. When I floated the boat for the first time in a bathtub, I estimated where the water would meet the painted water line. I've had to tune down the throttle range quite a bit to keep her at a reasonable speed. She drives beautifully! The brushless power system and LiPo battery are far more than the boat needs to run. I've driven this boat several times since it was finished last year. I didn't like either of those solutions so, it worked better for me to take a slight weight penalty for some extra strength and assurance that the chosen method would work well. I talked to the other guys and some said it would do fine and others stated that they only coated the bare wood with the epoxy with no cloth. Above all, I wasn't certain how well fiberglass cloth would adhere to the bottom with finishing resin. Thanks patmat! I wasn't confident that just the PVC material was good enough to be sealed water tight.
